There isn't anything I've read or heard that says breast feeding is easy. It is quite the learning process. It started for me with putting her on the breast in the delivery room and her latching on to only the nipple. Ouch. That left me with something resembling a blood blister. The L&D nurse the tried to help me (unsuccessfully) by squishing my breasts into nothingness. All I had to show for that was another bruise. The lactation consultant was much more helpful. It has, however, continued to be a learning experience. Everyone has a breast feeding story from their experience. I had my first last week.
Ellie started to cry at work and I picked her up to feed her. I was wearing a button-front shirt and unbuttoned all but the last button and the safety pin on top. I put on my nursing cover, then picked up the baby. My hand was made wet. She had soaked through her diaper, onesie, and pants. Ellie screamed through the whole process because she expected to eat. I took her across the store to one of my coworkers. I trusted this woman to hold my baby while I washed my hands. It was on the way to the wash my hands that I realized I had never re-buttoned my shirt and was flashing everyone. Oops.
