First Checkup

Tuesday we had the first doctor appointment for the baby. I was really excited because I wanted to know how much weight she had gained. Eliana's birth weight was 7 lbs. 8 oz. and her discharge weight (or at least the last weight I was told) was 6 lbs. 14 oz. I figured she had certainly gained her birth weight back, as she spends a heck of a lot of time feeding. She ended up weighing 7 lbs. 4 oz. The doctor said her weight was the only thing he was concerned about. She should weigh more. I've been worried that I'm not making enough milk for her. She sometimes has feedings that last an hour and wants more an hour later. The doctor said she didn't look dehydrated, but that he didn't like her weight. He told me to come in Friday to have her re-weighed.

On Friday I was a little nervous about what the outcome would be. I would rather avoid the cost and hassle of supplementing. We went in to weigh her again and (drum roll, please) she was up to 7 lbs. 10 oz. Six ounces in 3 days. Not bad. The nurse was happy and so were we.

I am definitely NOT the breastfeeding expert but one thing I think that I could have done better when I was breastfeeding was to have had more water. Just a thought.
